A Star in SOMA
By A Yahoo! Contributor 3/07

My husband & I own our home in the SOMA district. We are always going to the same digs for dinner. The other day before entering the 280 on-ramp, I saw that the Flower Market Cafe had some new signs on their building. They were advertising FREE parking for dinner from 5-10pm and happy hours from 4:30 to 6:30pm. We went there last night for dinner. Parking in the lot in front of the restaurant was FREE and plenty of parking. They greeted us at the doors with friendly smiles. There were candle lite tables, table cloths and napkins. It seemed a bit intimidating as I felt like I should have been dressed better than casual. (I just got back from shopping, wearing flip flops and my nicer sweatsuit.....But, it didn't matter. There's a bar in the back of the restaurant filled with people drinking, chatting and watching some sports event on the television. The service was great! The wait staff was accommodating too. The chef came by (Salvador) to intro himself. He's been a chef in the North Beach area for over 30 years. My husband & I ordered the Filet ($23.) which was served with vegs and potatoes (I had mashed). I ordered a small bowl of the Clam chowder, good flavor. The Filets were cooked just and overall plating was enough, not too filling & not too little.
We even had a lite sorbet afterwards. The lighting was enough and could be romantic. They have an outside seating area (all enclosed) maybe by a canope? After dinner mints were offered. Overall, we were pleased with the service, meal and environment! We're going back with our teenagers (3). We decided it's a place to go at least once a month. And it's close to home! Be prepared to spend at least $25. per person on the average for dinner. (the Prime rib is available only on Sat. & Sun.) (we're going to try their brunch soon.) Bon appetite! (Yahoo Link)

what's not to like about good food, free parking, easy access for a neighborhood restaurant. They have started serving dinners Weds thru Sunday. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable.

The dinners are reasonably priced, the service is efficient and friendly, they have a full bar- and the food is good. Unlike some other restaurants, the salads were not limp or wimpy. The garlic shrimp is wonderful and the veal dishes are really excellent.

Dinner here tonight was almost an erotic experience. We sat on the lovely warm patio. The waiter and bus boys seemed like they actually enjoyed being at work. I ordered the special: sauteed beef in mushrooms. Steve got Chicken Toscana.

When our waiter brought our plates out, he smirked like little boy with a dirty secret. Oh my god! The smell alone was enough to get me salivating. I bit into it and absolutely melted. Steve fed me a nibble of his chicken. No doubt, it was delicious. But I was truthful when I announced teasingly, "Mine's Better!"

I have no idea why Bachelli's Flower Market doesn't have a three hour wait to get a table. Even though the menu choices are mostly your old favorites, they go so far beyond just Italian food. The service isn't just impeccable; the staff is conversational. The chef even personally checks in with each table.

Bachelli's knows how to treat their customers and they know how to make food that stimulates your senses.

And hell! They even have a parking lot.

More Please!

Someone should mention that the service here is friendly and efficient, and that the decor is nice and that it's reasonably quiet (though it wasn't all that busy when we were there.) Sal (the chef) may come out and describe the specials to you himself.

It should also be noted that the appetizers (calamari and crab cakes in our case) were excellent. The calamari was a little saltier than I'd like, but I have deeply held and often unpopular opinions on the degree of saltiness appropriate for calamari. I suspect that most diners will judge the calamari to be ideally seasoned.

And people should know that the pepper steak comes with a nice crust the way it should, and is moist and flavorful when ordered medium rare. The rack of lamb is also delicious.

I'll bet that a lot of people would also order the cheesecake or tiramisu for desert if they knew how good it is.
